Push

A push occurs when a bet results in a tie—the final margin lands exactly on the spread number. When you push, your stake is refunded. No win, no loss.

How Pushes Happen

Pushes occur on whole-number spreads when the margin matches exactly:

Your Bet Final Score Margin Result
Chiefs -3 Chiefs 27-24 3 Push
Bills +7 Bills lose 28-21 7 Push
Over 47 Final: 24-23 47 total Push

The hook (half-point) exists specifically to prevent pushes by forcing binary outcomes.

Push Frequency

Pushes are relatively common around key numbers:

Spread Push Probability
3 ~8%
7 ~6%
6 ~3%
10 ~3%
Other whole numbers 1-2%

This is why buying off key numbers (moving -3 to -2.5) can be worth the extra vig.

Pushes in Parlays

Different books handle parlay pushes differently:

Most common: The pushed leg is removed and the parlay continues at reduced odds.

Example: 4-leg parlay with one push becomes a 3-leg parlay.

Some books: The entire parlay pushes if any leg pushes.

Always check house rules before betting parlays on whole-number spreads.

Push Strategy

Some bettors actively seek or avoid pushes:

Seeking pushes: If you're uncertain, a spread with push potential limits downside. Worst case = money back.

Avoiding pushes: If you have conviction, buy the hook to ensure a decisive outcome. No "wasted" bets.

Professional bettors generally prefer decisive outcomes. A push doesn't build the bankroll—it's dead money for a week.

Pushes in Prediction Markets

Binary event contracts on Kalshi rarely push because outcomes are yes/no. However, some markets have push conditions:

  • Event postponed → refund
  • Market voided → refund
  • Settlement dispute → potential refund

Always read market rules before trading.
